Punjab Government Imposes Section 144 Across the Province for 10 Days

In a major development, the Punjab Government has announced the imposition of Section 144 across the province for ten days, citing security and public safety concerns.

Purpose of the Decision

According to the official notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the decision aims to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents during this sensitive period. The order restricts public gatherings, rallies, protests, and sit-ins for the next ten days.

The government’s move is seen as a preventive measure to control the situation amid growing political and social tensions in various parts of the province.

Key Restrictions Under Section 144

Under this temporary law, the following activities have been strictly prohibited:

  • Holding of public gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

  • Carrying or displaying firearms in public.

  • Use of loudspeakers, except for Azaan (call to prayer) and Friday sermons.

  • Any activity that may disturb public peace or disrupt routine life.

Violations of this order may result in arrest and legal action under the Pakistan Penal Code and the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Act.

Government’s Stand

The Punjab Home Department emphasized that the decision was made purely for public safety and to ensure that peace and normal life continue without disruption. The administration has directed law enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with the order.

Public Reaction

While some citizens have expressed support, saying it’s a necessary step to ensure safety and prevent chaos, others view it as a restriction on democratic rights and freedom of expression. Political observers believe that the timing of the decision indicates growing concerns about upcoming rallies and protests in the region.

Conclusion

The imposition of Section 144 in Punjab highlights the government’s efforts to maintain peace amid rising tensions. Whether this move successfully prevents unrest or sparks further public debate remains to be seen over the coming days.
